Outdoor benches are typically installed once and not moved for years. Thats why one of the most important criteria when is their solidity and longevity. Benches made of too thin parts are likely to break up after some time of using. Steel benches that are not well treated will rust and untreated wooden benches will rot. A good idea when examining the bench longevity is to check for other benches from the same model that have been used for long time.
You can match an indoor bench to kitchen cabinets or bathroom cabinets, wood trim, or just about anything else in your home. You just dont want the bench to look out of place. Another important consideration when thinking about type of wood is durability. Solid wood benches will last a lot longer and take a lot more abuse than benches that are made of MDF, or medium density fiberboard. If you arent sure whether the bench is sold wood or MDF, then just try to pick it up and see how heavy it is.
A bench is basically a table where work is performed. But it is not just an ordinary table. For one thing it has to be pretty solid and tough. How else can you effectively perform your work if you will do it on a feeble table? Sturdiness is perhaps the main attribute of a good bench. Other common qualities of a home work bench are: furnishing for easy access and storage of tools, an implement to stabilize a work-piece to the surface and make it workable with both hands, appropriate height for comfortable working.
